OUR ACADEMY

Developing the complete tennis player.

The Tennis Kernel Academy Limited provides a structured environment in which players can develop strong technical fundamentals, science-based tactical habits, athletic movement and the mental skills required for competition.

Our work extends beyond performance. Kernels are expected to grow in discipline, respect, confidence, responsibility and character.

Kernels Lead By Example academy crest

The Tennis Kernel Academy (TTKA) was founded at Up Park Camp, Kingston, Jamaica, with a singular vision: to create professional and recreational tennis players who are steeped in the most central concepts and skills of competitive tennis.

The academy's name reflects its philosophy. “Kernel” references the military rank of Colonel, while also representing the central concepts and skills—the “kernels” of tennis. Students and parents are affectionately known as Kernels, a designation intended to inspire pride and belonging.

TTKA places particular emphasis on understanding the science and thinking behind the sport. The academy's WhatsApp Journal is an important part of that educational approach, providing off-court learning, feedback, videos and messages designed to shape how Kernels think about tennis.

Our vision

“To contribute to setting the conditions for tennis to become a major sport in Jamaica, where it is actively played in schools, colleges/universities and recreational levels; the national youth, junior and senior teams are consistently competitive at the regional and international levels; and our players are sought after to be given scholarships at prominent tertiary institutions globally.”

Our mission

“To be a tennis academy that efficiently assists our players to achieve their tennis goals.”

The Kernel philosophy and mindset

Let’s build Rome in one day…or less

TTKA values audacity, efficiency, out-of-the-box thinking and an insatiable appetite for effectiveness. The academy embraces rapid improvement while recognising the work required to master a skill.

The Lizard

The lizard in the TTKA logo is a reminder not to panic about something that cannot harm us. A tennis ball is still only a ball. Kernels are encouraged to remain mentally in control and make deliberate choices.

Mindset

Scholarly — Digest and regurgitate relevant tennis knowledge.
Intellectual — Enjoy solving tennis problems.
Discipline — Know your tennis and repeat the right actions.
Efficient — Build Rome in a day through nuanced thinking.
Commitment — Work on improvement for as long as it takes.

Success Orientation

Success is measured not only by winning, but by doing everything within our control: our own effort and our own attitude. Kernels train hard to give their very best in competition while accepting that opponents may do the same.

THE KERNEL CHANTCOME HERE!!!
OR COME YA BWAY!!!

A shout of enthusiasm used to induce energy and encourage the fight until the end—never as disrespect toward an opponent.

Code of conduct and registration

The highest standard of discipline and exemplary conduct is expected of all Kernels, including parents.

Discipline

Students are expected to treat instructions given by the coach as an imperative, not a suggestion. Rudeness, temper tantrums, antisocial behaviour, and actions such as tossing or smashing racquets are not tolerated.

Respect

Kernels are expected to be gracious to opponents, especially in defeat, and to maintain the standards of conduct required by the academy.

Attendance

Students who will be absent or late are expected to communicate promptly with the coach. Students retain the right to discontinue attendance, while the coach retains the right to discontinue training.

Transfers

Students transferring from another coach or academy are encouraged to notify their former coach or academy. TTKA does not solicit students in other programs, but will consider a student who initiates contact, subject to vacancy and acceptance of the Code of Conduct.

RegistrationA non-refundable registration fee of $3,000 JMD is required. Registration includes a TTKA-branded T-shirt.

COLOURED BALL TENNIS SERIES

Competition that develops the player.

The Coloured Ball Tennis Series is a series of three tournaments annually that provides competitive developmental opportunities at the red, orange, and green ball levels.

The series began in February 2025 with only orange and green ball divisions; however, subsequent gaps at the red ball level resulted in the inclusion of red ball divisions.

Existing divisions

  • Red ball: 6 and under, 8 and under, and 10 and under, using the mini court.
  • Orange ball: 11 and under, using an orange ball court.
  • Green ball: 12 and under, using the full court.

Tournament photographs may include participants from other academies and are presented as tournament imagery rather than as Kernel achievements.
